ST. NORBERT EXTRACURRICULAR
ACTIVITIES
Artwork done by the students is displayed throughout the year for reviewing by
parents, students and visitors. An all-school Art Fair is held during Catholic
Schools Week.
Students’ work is selected for exhibition
outside the school as part of the Oakton Community Kid’s College Art Fair at
Glenbrook North High School and/or Oakton Community College and occasionally at
local malls. Students participate
in community sponsored poster competitions for fire prevention, recycling, bike
safety, and drug awareness.
All students, grades 3 -
8, are eligible to be song leaders at Mass. The children are involved in
preparing for performances such as all-school Masses, Christmas and Spring
concerts and other events as they come up.
Twice a year special plays are performed. In December, students in grades preschool 4 - 4th participate and in March, students in grades 5th-8th participate.
The Poetry Festival is
held each year in the Spring. Students in grade 7 recite poetry and students in
grade 8 perform monologues.

Workshops
Our Drug-Free Program is
an ongoing project. The philosophies
are inclusive and integrated into the regular school curriculum.
Great Books is offered in
grades K-8th. There are six weekly meetings - 45 minutes long - run by adult
volunteers (1 adult per group). Students read excerpts from material selected
for their level by the Great Books Foundation.
Advent and Lenten themes
for school and school liturgies are planned by the Religion Committee They plan
and suggest appropriate decorations to be used throughout the school. The P.A.
is used for a short reading or thought for the day.
Usually each season ends
with a liturgy or para-liturgy. The Living Stations and a prayer service are
held during Holy Week. Weekly school
Masses are celebrated during Advent and Lent.
They are also available to
help plan all-school Masses, which are held every first Friday of each school
month and on special occasions. Class Masses are held during the week.
Students do all readings
over the P.A. system. Also, students are commentators, petitioners, lectors and
gift bearers for all-school Masses. Students participate in the Living Stations.
During the month of
October, we recite one decade of the rosary over the P.A. every day.
Math contests are held in
school for all students in grades 4th-8th.
Mission awareness is
ongoing throughout the school year. Emphasis is placed on the missions during the
Advent and Lenten seasons. Money is raised by Student Council activities as well
as classroom raffles and bake sales. The money is donated to the Holy Childhood
Association and the School Sisters of St Francis for their mission work in
South and Central America and India.
The 6th-8th grade classes
participate in the National Geographic Society Geography Bee. This is conducted
through the Social Studies classes. Children are asked a series of questions in
the area of social studies. The student who correctly answers the most questions
in their class proceeds to the school geography bee to compete for the school
championship. The winner then takes a written test to see if he/she qualities to
go to the State meet.
The Language Arts Olympiad
is a national test given each year. This testing covers vocabulary, synonyms,
punctuation, grammar, comprehension, spelling, and word relationships. All
students in grades 5th-8th participate in this testing.
Students participate in
the Science Olympiad. It is a 35-minute
test given in class. The top 10 per
grade get awards. Participation is 100% in grades 5th-8th.
Students in grades 6, 7
and 8 participate in the Social Studies Olympiad This testing covers history,
geography and political science. The top 10 per grade get awards. Participation
is 100% in grades 6th-8th.
Students in grades 4th-8th
have the opportunity to join Orchesis, a dance group. They meet once a week after school.
Peer tutoring is open to
all students in grades 7 and 8. Based on the needs and times required by the
teachers, students are assigned to rooms and time schedules. The students are
asked to correct papers, work with the younger children, read to the children, assist
in the preparation of the classroom for the following day, and perform any
other tasks that are necessary.
Junior Achievement assigns
consultants to grades K-8th to provide instruction in economic concepts and
practices. Cooperative learning is stressed with a wide variety of activities.
Classes are held once a week for five to thirteen weeks, depending upon the
grade level.
This is a peer support
group for children who live in single parent homes or with step families, due
to death or divorce. It also encompasses children who are facing other difficult
family transitions. Each group consists of 3-5 children, and is facilitated by a
trained and caring adult. Our facilitators are teachers. This is open to children
in grades K-8th.
Students in grades 7 and 8
prepare projects which are displayed and judged, and may go to the area and
State competition.
Spelling Bees are
sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Chicago Tribune. All teachers
encourage students to study in preparation for the contests. Word lists are
distributed in Language Arts classes and students have class spelling bees to
prepare for the annual contests. The
winners in the local contests are eligible for regional competition.
All students in grades
5th-8th are eligible to participate in the Spelling Bees.
Students in grades 1 through 8 participate in a class retreat. The 7th graders attend their annual retreat, which is part of the Confirmation Preparation Program. The 8th grade students attend a retreat run by the school. Back to top

St Norbert’s Pride Board
helps instill self-esteem in our students.
Each student in grades Preschool through 8th is chosen to be represented
on the Pride Board as their classroom's “Student of the Week.”
The student
chooses a paper or project that he/she wishes to be displayed on the bulletin
board.
The Village of Northbrook
invites an 8th grade student to participate in Student Government Day. The
student tours the village campus, plans a village meeting, spends time with
village counterparts and gains a better understanding of how local government
operates. The student is selected through submitting short essays. The day culminates at a mock Village Meeting
conducted by the students.
The Student Council
organizes projects for the students throughout the year. The projects may be
recycling, Mardi Gras or Fun Day.
Senior Coffee

The Student Council
sponsors a coffee for the senior citizens on St. Patrick’s Day following the
8:30 a m. Mass. There are usually (depending on the weather) anywhere from 20
to 40 people. The members of the Council decorate, bring the refreshments and
serve the coffee. |
Alumni Dance
|
In the Spring, a dance is held for all
the graduates of St. Norbert School from freshmen to seniors in high school.
There is no cost; the funds for the DJ are raised by the Council members. |
The children are involved
in several writing contests during the year.
The children may enter contests sponsored by the local newspaper, the
Northbrook Jaycees, and the Longmeadow Journal Short Story competition.
Faculty, along with
students, help design and create the School Yearbook, learning layout, copy and
interviewing skills. The importance of commitment and meeting deadlines is
learned.
All students are eligible
to participate in the design and creation of the yearbook.
